According to information revealed in a forthcoming book, former President Donald Trump was ‘disturbed’ by Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s decision not to accept an offer to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom early of 2021.
Additionally, the former president also claimed that Belichick took the time to look for Trump on the golf course several months later.
For the upcoming book “This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future”, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns spoke with Trump in April 2021. The interview included Trump’s characterization of Belichick.
Details of the interview were released ahead of the book’s May 3 release date as part of a clip shared by Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson.
In the clip, Trump’s account of his relationship with Belichick is covered, including the Patriots coach’s refusal to accept the Medal of Freedom in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol. United by Trump supporters.
Here is the excerpt:
Trump boasted that it wasn’t just Republican politicians who crawled to his side after he briefly rejected him after Jan. 6.
One of the refusals that bothered him the most came from Bill Belichick, the legendary New England Patriots coach who turned down Trump’s attempt to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Immediately after the riot, it was simply not possible for him to show up with Trump. At the time, Trump said, Belichick had “chickened off.” But listen to this, Trump said: The coach had just played golf at Trump’s nearby course just a week earlier. Trump had met him there on the penultimate hole. “He came to see me on the 17th,” recounts the former commander-in-chief with delight.
Showing credulity to anyone familiar with Belichick’s gruff persona, Trump claimed, “He hugged me and kissed me.”
The Belichick-Trump moment on the golf course reportedly happened in March 2021.
Belichick’s declined the Medal of Freedom days after the Capitol attack, citing “the tragic events of the past week” as the reason.
Over the weekend, Belichick was reportedly at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, according to Political journalist Meridith McGraw. Belichick and Linda Holiday were also spotted alongside former Jaguars coach Urban Meyer in a photo posted to social media by Ohio property manager Brian Schottenstein.
