Hawaiian Electric said Monday morning that its crews continued to work to restore electrical service to customers affected by the storm system moving to the island of Hawaii and the state.
Since Sunday, approximately 20,000 customers have suffered brief to prolonged power outages caused by gusts of wind and fallen trees on the island’s transmission and distribution system. Most of the outages occurred in the southern part of the island of Hawaii between Kurtistown and Volcano and in southern Kona between Ocean View and Kealia, with a period of early morning outages in Captain Cook’s Kona area. in Keahole.
The crews worked through the night and will continue the restoration efforts today. This morning, crews are working to restore power to approximately 7,000 customers from Kamaoa to Kealia, Orchid Isle to Volcano Village, as well as numerous blackouts scattered across lower Puna.
Customers of Orchid Isle, Royal Hawaiian Estates, and Wright Road in Volcano are urged to prepare for an extended outage due to many problem areas caused by winds and vegetation. Due to adverse weather conditions, crews cannot safely access parts of the transmission line serving this area to assess damage and make repairs.
According to an online map from Hawaiian Electric, the outage affects 2,592 customers.
Hawaiian Electric is also reminding the community to stay at least 30 feet from downed power lines. Downed power lines are live and dangerous.
Updates of the outages are posted on the company’s Twitter account @HIElectricLight. To report a power line outage or outage, please call (808) 969-6666.
